Wind Energy
The American Wind Energy Association has an on-line
catalog
of publications that should be visited. Here are some specific recommendations
from TXSES wind experts:
Wind Power for Home & Business : Renewable Energy for the 1990s
and Beyond (Real Goods Independent Living Book), by Paul Gipe
Wind Energy Basics : A Guide to Small and Micro Wind Systems (Real
Goods Solar Living Book)
Wind Energy Comes of Age
(Wiley Series in Sustainable Design), by Paul Gipe
Wind Turbine Engineering Design, by David M. Eggleston, Forrest S. Stoddard
Climate Change
The Heat Is on : The Climate Crisis, The Coverup, The Prescription, by
Ross Gelbspan, explores the science of global warming, the successful attempts
by the fossil fuel industry to label it "junk science", and the potential for
solutions.
Alternative Transportation
Forward Drive : The Race to Build the Car of the Future, by Jim Motavalli
Oil
The Coming Oil Crisis, by C.J. Campbell, a retired
petroleum geologist, gives an excellent background of
petroleum geology and the oil industry, and explains
why a peak in worldoil production, with a subsequent
decline, is not far away.
Geodestinies : The inevitable Control of earth Resources over nations
and individuals, by Walter Youngquist, explores the dependence of
humanity on natural resources.
Ecology/Sustainability
Beyond the Limits, by Donella Meadows, Dennis Meadows, Jorgen Randers.
Back in the 70s, a book called "The Limits to Growth" presented
the results of computer modeling experiments in which possible
scenarios for the world were explored. Though it created quite a splash
at the time, its warnings have been essentially unheeded.
"Beyond the Limits" picks up where hte original left off, and
updates things for the 1990s.
Earth Odyssey : Around the World in...,
by Mark Hertsgaard, tells of the author's
first-hand experiences touring the world trying to understand
ecological problems. A memorable book.
A Green History of the World : The Environment and the Collapse
of Great Civilizations, by Clive Ponting, describes
the history of man's interaction with the environment, and how
he repeatedly bumped into growth limits.
Food, Energy, and Society, edited by David and Marcia Pimentel.
You may think that the food you eat is mostly solar energy,
but the fact is, modern agriculture relies heavily on enormous
amounts of fossil fuels for fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides,
to generate its high output. This book
gives the "big picture" of energy as it relates to feeding the
world.
The American Solar Energy Society has many publications related to
Solar Energy that cannot easily be obtained elsewhere. Please
visit their catalog.
