Industry Spotlight: Mission Solar

In each Solar Report newsletter, we feature one of our highly regarded Platinum Business Members with an exclusive interview. This month, TXSES Communications Director Tamara Kowalski reached out to Mission Solar President Sam Martens to learn about the company’s mission, accomplishments, and impacts on customers.

Origins and Leadership

Mission Solar was founded in San Antonio over a decade ago to bring high-quality solar manufacturing to American soil. I was actually here when we first broke ground, so stepping in as president last year feels a bit like coming home. Before that, I spent five years as senior director of strategy at our parent company, OCI Enterprises, and earlier in my career worked across Asia in investment banking and policy research, focusing on the semiconductor and solar sectors. It’s been a journey that’s taken me from Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong and then to Texas, always with one foot in the renewable energy world.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to make a global impact by building high-quality, durable solar solutions that help people achieve energy independence. We’re committed to reliability and performance, so every product we make is built to last. Our vision is to set the benchmark for reliability and ethical standards in the solar industry, delivering the highest level of customer satisfaction while making sure our team feels valued and empowered.

Approach to Projects

We start by listening. Whether it’s a rooftop array for a family home or a multi-megawatt commercial site, we want to understand the customer’s priorities. From there, it’s about pairing the right product with the right application and standing behind it for the long haul. We see every project as a partnership, not just a transaction.

Biggest Impact on Your Career in this Industry

The people. Solar is full of passionate, smart, and driven individuals working toward a common goal. Seeing how innovation, grit, and collaboration can reshape an industry—and our energy future—has kept me inspired year after year.

Key Accomplishments

We’re proud to have produced millions of American-assembled modules that are powering homes, businesses, and communities across the country. We’ve weathered market shifts, policy changes, and supply chain disruptions—yet we’ve continued to grow, invest in our facilities, and expand into the commercial and utility segments without compromising quality.

Industry Surprises and Dynamics

How fast things change. Policy, technology, and market conditions can shift overnight. But for all the unpredictability, you’ll also find a strong sense of purpose and camaraderie. You’re part of something bigger than yourself.

Challenges Faced

Competing with heavily subsidized imports has been a constant challenge. It’s pushed us to be sharper, more innovative, and more transparent with our customers about why domestic manufacturing matters for quality, reliability, and national energy security.

Unique Contributions or Initiatives

We’re proud to support STEM education and workforce development programs in Texas. From hosting facility tours for students to partnering with local organizations, we see it as an investment in the next generation of energy leaders.

Thoughts on Recent Tariff Changes

We’ve long advocated for fair trade practices that level the playing field for American manufacturers. The recent tariff actions are a step toward ensuring the long-term health of domestic solar production. For us, it means more opportunity to invest in our people, our technology, and our capacity.

Future Outlook

Continued growth. We’re expanding our product lines, increasing capacity, and leaning into the commercial and utility markets while still supporting our residential partners. The demand for high-quality, American-assembled solar has never been stronger and we’re ready to meet it.

Final Thoughts

The solar industry is standing on the edge of a major shift. We have the tools, the expertise, and the capacity to change the way America is powered. What we need now is to make sure the world sees us for what we are: reliable, fast to deploy, cost-competitive, and ready to match legacy energy sources on every front. Mission Solar is proud to be part of that push forward, and we’re just getting warmed up.
